The Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union of Canada was founded in 1999 under the name of the Assyrian Canadian Student Union (ACSU). Ever since its creation our Student Union has been actively working in our community and organizing numerous student events and working collaboratively with other organizations in the planning and implementation of our joint cultural ventures and memorials.
In the past three years our Student Union decided to shift its focus from the community and concentrate on creating university clubs and approach the academic community. At the universities of York and McMaster and more recently the University of Toronto, you can find our students vigorously networking and raising awareness of our proud culture and history.
Some of the annual events that we have been known for are the Genocide and Cultural Awareness days. In the past few months our Student Union decided to strengthen the links between our University clubs and the community. While changing our structure we realized the importance of also adding on to our original name and making it more inclusive. Although we are very proud of our historic Assyrian name, we have realized that as our Nation has persisted through thousands of years it has adopted some names that our people continue to use (i.e. Chaldean and Syriac). Therefore we all agreed to include them in our name and hence calling our organization The Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union.
We are hopeful that our organization will unite students from different churches and regions. We believe that the Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union (hereafter referred to with the acronym of "ACSSU") in its newest form is stronger and more capable than ever.
