Yes, if you would like to get into design work you need to be licensed as a Professional Engineer in order to have legal design responsibility. This requires taking an Ethics Exam and having 4 years of relevant design experience. This is not done through school, but through the PEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario).
What are the Day-to-Day Responsibilities in your Position?
I coordinate between the sub trades onsite, consultants (i.e. architects), and owners so that the construction progresses according to the project schedule. I also seek out and administer contracts for the various trades required for the job. I am involved in all aspects of construction administration such as scheduling, shop drawing review, progress billing, tender closing, site visits, bonding applications, etc.
What are some Skills you require to be Successful in your Position?
Must be very organized and able to communicate clearly and effectively. Must be able to adapt to changing situations and deal with problems quickly and effectively. Must be confident.
What is the Work Environment for an Entry Level Position? (i.e. Clientele type, Working Space, etc.)
Depends in your specialization. Construction management – my position; Structural Eng.– Engineering Assistant; etc.
What is the Highest Position you can reach in this Field and Describe its Work Environment?
Project manager – managing large-scale construction projects such as high-rise buildings or infrastructure (i.e. highways, roads, transportation systems, water management systems, etc.).
What is the Most Valuable Thing you have learned in your Career?
To only do what you enjoy because it makes the work not feel like work!
