Life Of A Mesopotamian Refugee (2015)

The Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union (ACSSU) of Canada and its university branches at Brock, McMaster, Ryerson, York, and University of Toronto will be dedicating one week to the refugees in Iraq and Syria.

On Monday November 16th until Thursday the 19th, active members and friends of ACSSU will be sleeping in front of McMaster and Ryerson University with the hopes of fulfilling two goals. The first is to raise awareness about the plight of the internally displaced peoples in former Mesopotamia (Iraq and Syria) who have been affected by the ongoing crisis caused by the Islamic State. The second will be to raise money to send to these refugees who are currently in need of necessities such as food and water to survive.

The individuals who will be sleeping will not be allowed the use of electronics, will only eat food brought to them by others, and will have to sleep outside in an effort to emulate the life of the refugees.

Last year’s LMR event was successful in raising $20,115.42 which helped to provide much needed food, shelter and clothing to those most affected by the atrocities of ISIS.

The goal of this campaign will be to raise a minimum of $25,000 to provide much needed help for thousands of families. The Canadian government has announced that it will match every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities in response to the impact of the conflict in Syria, up to $100 million until December 31, 2015.

From this year’s initiative, the funds will be given to Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) a Canadian registered charity, which currently is providing aid to displaced peoples of Syria. CNEWA has long been active in its support of the churches and peoples of Syria, and has stepped up its activities since the civil war, rushing aid to thousands of displaced families within the country, as well as schooling and counseling in those few areas that remain secure. For more information on CNEWA, please visit

Through our efforts, the amounts raised by ACSSU and sent to CNEWA will be doubled by Canada and given to international and Canadian humanitarian organizations as part of their Syria Emergency Relief Fund.

People can donate to this cause by visiting any of the university branches during the dates listed above, or by visiting; and donate online to “Life of a Mesopotamian Refugee” through the youcaring.compage. All donations above $10 are tax deductible. The official online donations page is:
