On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, ACSSU at York hosted an open-to-the-public writing workshop. Guests Mariam Georgis and Ashor Sworesho came to teach the basics of how to write in Neo-Aramaic. There was a brief introduction to the history of Aramaic and the influence it had in the development of Hebrew and Arabic. Following that, everyone was taught the alphabet and how the vowel system works. Refreshments were provided afterwards for everyone’s hard work. ACSSU at York would like to thank Founders College, the college at York where their office is located, for letting them hold this event in their student space. ACSSU would also like to thank Mariam and Ashor for their help as well. Geoff Cook, an Environmental Studies student at York remarked about his commented about the event, “It was a valuable and enlightening experience to have learned the rudiments of one of the oldest writing systems in the world.” |
