The Assyrian Chaldean Syriac Student Union (ACSSU) of Canada proudly launched a Positive Youth Development and Mentorship initiative at St. Jean De BreBeuf Catholic Secondary School in Vaughan, Ontario. ACSSU’s aim is to outreach to Assyrian (also known as Chaldean and Syriac) high school students by providing them with resources to succeed in high school and post-secondary education. ACSSU offers a financial scholarship for new and continuing students obtaining a post-secondary degree or diploma.
On December 2nd and 3rd ACSSU representative had the pleasure of promoting ACSSU and recruiting all Assyrian students from St. Jean De BreBeuf by having an ACSSU table within the school. It was extremely wonderful to encounter such great energy from the Assyrian students who were so happy to hear about ACSSU and the chance for them to participate and contribute. Also, the students were able to educate many of their peers about Assyrians and they truly demonstrated the great diversity of cultural within Canada.
Overall, ACSSU received information for about a hundred Assyrian students during the two day tabling presentation. The official launch of the ACSSU Positive Youth Development and Mentorship high school program will be on January 10, 2011. We will be presenting on ACSSU and provide information to the Assyrian Students about our program details and how they can become involved within the Assyrian Canadian community. ACSSU is also involved in the Hamilton region where we provide tutoring for many Assyrian students from the area every Friday from 4:30.
ACSSU would like to thank Mr. R. Villani, St. Jean De BreBeuf C.S.S. for all his help and support with this initiative. We look forward to working with the students and staff.
Please email us if you have any questions or comments. For students, please email us about how you can become involved. We look forward to hearing from you.
